Justice, Mercy, Humility
Lower School Christian Emphasis Week
For Christian Emphasis Week 2021, the Love Hall community chose to focus on Micah 6:8b, the Bible verse that has served as the Lower School motto for the last 25 years: “What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.”
The theme was launched at a virtual assembly the Friday before Holy Week by focusing on poetry as a way to express feelings and have a voice. The students viewed an interview with the National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman and learned how she uses “word clouds” to brainstorm before writing poetry.
During Holy Week, each morning focused on one aspect of the verse. Monday was “Do justice.” Tuesday was “Love Mercy,” and Wednesday was “Walk Humbly.” The students looked at the stories of Zaccheus and Ruth as examples of justice and mercy. The students created their own word clouds, and each day, they worked on writing their own poems about Michah 6:8b.
Many students wrote poems about standing up for others, loving your neighbor, and showing kindness to all.
On Maundy Thursday, all students brought a flower to school to flower the cross, a Lower School tradition. The Easter service was virtual and included a short re-telling of the Easter story, the Westminster Virtual Choir rendition of Micah 6:8b, and a video presentation of the students’ finished poems.
Justice is fairness
Fairness is loving
Loving is kindness
Kindness is caring
Caring people are trustworthy
Trustworthy people make God happy
And fair, loving, kind people
Make God happiest of all
